Basics: Sentinel, Paragon, Colonist/Sole Survivor.
Headcanon: Sarah Jane Shepard was named after her two grandmothers; Sarah Gowan, who was a world renowned photojournalist and human rights activist; and Jane Shepard, a country farmer and horse breeder.  Sarah was raised on the Alliance Colony, Mindoir, by her loving parents John and Hannah.  Hannah Gowan was an ex-alliance Lieutenant who fell in love with a strong, noble farmer, and convinced him to move to another planet with her.  Aside from a few vacations here and there, John Shepard had never moved more than fifty square miles from the town he was born in, until he met a beautiful and exciting woman he would follow to the ends of the Earth, and beyond.  Along with Sarah, John and Hannah had one other daughter, Grace, who was six years Sarah’s junior.  They grew wheat and raised horses on the family farm.
Even though Sarah lost her entire family to a batarian slaver attack at sixteen years old, they forever remain a big part of who she is.  From her father she learned patience, a strong work ethic, and a love for all technology.  Her mother taught her courage, a sense of adventure, and how to shoot a bottle off a fence from one hundred yards away.  From Grace, she learned how to be a role model and how to take care of someone not as strong as her.
At 5’6” Sarah is of average height and build, despite being exceptionally strong and agile.  Her light ginger hair and freckles come from her maternal grandmother, but her lovely green eyes she gets from her dad.  She likes purple, dry humor, and has a weakness for vanilla ice cream and hot tea.  No stranger to loss, she does not make friends lightly, but is unflinchingly loyal to those she does hold dear.
Kaidan Alenko is the love of her life.  Her best friend in the galaxy is Garrus Vakarian.  She prefers old movies to new ones and likes to read periodicals on up and coming technology.  She can’t sing or dance worth speaking about, but her double chocolate brownie recipe is legendary.   Sometimes in her off duty hours, she and Tali build little combative robots and stage epic battles in the bowels of the Normandy’s engineering deck.
The Commander does not tolerate the death or mistreatment of innocent people, ever.  She champions against this, in part because of what happened to her family and in part because she lost her entire squad to a Cerberus-planned thresher maw attack on Akuze.  She’s seen enough senseless death to last a lifetime and she considers it her mission to defend the helpless.
As a Sentinel, Sarah is an almost unbeatable combination of powerful biotics and impressive tech abilities.  Her tech armor and overload programs make her especially hard to kill, allowing her to get close enough to slice her enemies apart with her duel omniblades.  Her favorite biotic powers are warp, throw, and the amazing flare ability she learns from Aria T’Loak while helping her liberate Omega.  Add in the fact that Sarah is an expert marksman and sniper, and she can plow through most enemies with little trouble
After destroying the Reapers, Sarah spends almost a year recovering from her extensive injuries in a rehabilitation hospital on Earth.  Afterward, she and Kaidan are married and eventually have three children (Ashton, Hannah, and John), all of which are powerful biotics.  Admiral Hackett offers Shepard a promotion and her own command again, but by this point, she’s had enough of war and is ready for something else.  Hackett respects this decision and offers her an alternate way to make a difference.
The Shepard-Alenko family lives primarily on the Citadel, where Sarah is the Human Councilor.  Kaidan is her top human spectre and helps run a multi-species academy for biotics.  Every chance they get, the family goes to visit Kaidan’s mother at her orchard in Vancouver, where they can relax, ride their horses, and forget about their responsibilities for a while.
